Bring a little eerie ambiance to your Halloween décor with these easy Mason Jar Luminaries. With a few simple supplies — jars, tissue paper or paint, and flameless candles — you can create glowing ghost faces, flying bats, or pumpkin grins that light up the night.
They’re quick, budget-friendly, and safe for kids to help make since they use battery-operated tea lights instead of real candles. Arrange a few on your porch steps or cluster them on a mantel to give your home a spooky (and cozy) Halloween glow.
Materials
- Mason jars (any size or shape)
- Tissue paper or acrylic paint in Halloween colors (orange, green, purple, or black)
- Mod Podge or watered-down school glue
- Paintbrush or sponge brush
- Black cardstock or construction paper (for silhouettes or faces)
- Scissors and tape or glue dots
- Battery-operated tea lights or mini LED fairy lights
- Optional: ribbon, twine, stickers, or glow-in-the-dark accents for finishing touches
Instructions
1. Prep the Jars
Wash and dry the jars thoroughly. Remove any labels or residue so the light shines through cleanly.
2. Add the Glow Layer
Choose how you want to create the glowing effect:
- Tissue paper method: Brush Mod Podge or glue over the outside of the jar, then press on pieces of tissue paper until the surface is covered. Smooth gently with your fingers.
- Painted method: Mix acrylic paint with a bit of water for a translucent look and brush it over the jar exterior. Let dry completely.
3. Create Spooky Designs
Cut out Halloween shapes — bats, ghosts, jack-o’-lantern faces, spiders, or witches — from black cardstock. Use Mod Podge, glue dots, or tape to attach them to the jar.
4. Light Them Up
Drop a battery-operated tea light or a small string of fairy lights inside each jar. Switch them on and watch the spooky glow appear.
5. Add Finishing Touches
Tie a piece of ribbon, raffia, or twine around the rim. For extra flair, add a Halloween tag or a few small plastic spiders.
Display Ideas
- Line your front steps, walkway, or porch railing with glowing jars to welcome trick-or-treaters.
- Cluster several sizes together on a mantel or sideboard for a Halloween centerpiece.
- Set a few in windows to create a flickering glow from outside.
- Mix in mini pumpkins, cobwebs, or fall leaves for added texture and color.
Tips & Variations
- Add a scoop of sand or pebbles to the bottom of each jar to keep them stable outdoors.
- Try glow-in-the-dark paint or neon tissue paper for an extra eerie effect under blacklight.
- For a sleeker look, use frosted spray paint instead of tissue paper.
- Kids can decorate their jars with stickers, markers, or googly eyes for a fun crafting activity.
Safety Note
Always use battery-operated candles or lights — never open flames — especially if you’re decorating with paper or tissue.
