In Season Now: Radishes

In Season Now: Radishes

Radishes are one of the first vegetables to appear in spring markets: crisp, colorful, and full of peppery bite. While they’re available year-round, they’re at their sweetest and most tender in spring and early summer, when their flavor is bright but not overpowering.

Most of us know the classic red globe radish, but you may also spot elongated French Breakfast radishes or larger watermelon radishes with their striking pink interiors. No matter the variety, radishes bring crunch, color, and freshness to the table, and they’re far more versatile than many home cooks realize.

They’re delicious raw, but roasting mellows their sharpness into something almost buttery. Quick pickling transforms them into a tangy topping. And sometimes, the simplest preparation, like sliced with good butter and salt, is the most satisfying of all.

Here’s how to choose, store, and use radishes, plus five easy recipes to make the most of the season.

Buying & Storing Cheat Sheet
