Spooky Black Velvet Cupcakes

Spooky Black Velvet Cupcakes

Black velvet cupcakes are the moodier, more dramatic cousin of classic red velvet — and just right for Halloween. Deeply hued, soft, and moist, these cupcakes strike the perfect balance of decadence and playfulness. With their smooth, cocoa-forward flavor and signature tang from cream cheese frosting and buttermilk, they deliver the same comforting flavor as the traditional version — only darker, richer, and a little more mysterious.

About That Jet-Black Color

If you made our Black Cocoa Halloween Cookies, you already know the secret to that striking black color: black cocoa powder. It’s the same ingredient that gives Oreo cookies their deep hue and bittersweet chocolate flavor. For this recipe, you can use all black cocoa for an intensely dark, true-black finish, or blend it with Dutch-process cocoa for a milder flavor and softer texture.

A small touch of black gel food coloring can make the color even more dramatic — just a drop or two turns the batter a perfect midnight shade without affecting taste or texture.

Baking Tips & Key Ingredients

  • Oil, not butter: Oil gives these cupcakes a tender crumb and helps them stay moist for days.
  • Buttermilk and vinegar: The acidity reacts with baking soda to create that classic “velvet” texture — smooth, fluffy, and slightly tangy.
  • Black cocoa: Adds depth, color, and that distinctive chocolatey edge.
  • Cream cheese frosting: A must. Its sweet-tart flavor balances the rich cocoa and adds a luxurious finish.

For a Halloween touch, top with candy eyes, a sprinkle of black sanding sugar, or a drizzle of orange-colored chocolate.

Makes 12 cupcakes

Ingredients

For the cupcakes:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup black cocoa powder (or 2 Tbsp black cocoa + 2 Tbsp Dutch-process cocoa)
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: 2–3 drops black gel food coloring

For the frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Orange gel food coloring (optional)

Decorations:
Halloween sprinkles, candy corn and candy pumpkins.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with dark or Halloween-themed cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, oil, egg, buttermilk, vinegar, and vanilla until smooth. Add food coloring if using.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir gently until just combined — do not overmix.
  5. Divide batter evenly among the liners (about two-thirds full). Bake 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cupcakes cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
  7. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt, and beat until light and creamy. Add the gel food coloring if using.
  8. Frost the cooled cupcakes by hand or use a piping bag and decorate as desired.

Decorating Ideas

  • Colorful Drizzle: Melt and color white chocolate or use candy melts in bright, contrasting Halloween colors (like orange, lime green, or purple) to drizzle over the cupcakes.
  • Candy Eyes: Press a pair or cluster of candy eyes into the frosting for a playful, spooky look.
  • Sprinkles & Sugar: Add black sanding sugar, edible glitter, or themed Halloween sprinkles for texture and sparkle.
  • Two-Tone Frosting: Fill one side of a piping bag with orange frosting and the other with white or black for a marbled swirl effect.

Storage Tips

Store frosted cupcakes in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving for the best texture. Unfrosted cupcakes can be frozen up to 2 months — thaw before frosting and decorating.

A Sweetly Spooky Finale

These black velvet cupcakes are the kind of treat that turns any October night into a celebration. Elegant yet fun, familiar yet a little edgy — they’re everything you want in a Halloween dessert: rich, tender, and unforgettable.
